Vancouver Art Gallery Turns 95: A Cultural Celebration for Families

Vancouver Art Gallery Celebrates 95 Years

Celebrating 95 Years of Art and Community

The Vancouver Art Gallery (VAG), a cornerstone of cultural life in Vancouver, is celebrating an incredible 95 years this October. Since its inception in 1931, the gallery has been a vibrant space where art intersects with community, providing a platform for both local and global artistic expressions. As part of the anniversary celebrations, the VAG will open its doors by donation on Friday, October 2nd, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, allowing all to experience its rich collection of art.

Engaging Exhibitions and Special Events

This milestone will not only feature the gallery’s stunning exhibitions but will also spotlight the new exhibit, “Notes from the Vault: 95 Years of Collecting.” Opening the same day, it will delve into the history and breadth of the gallery's remarkable collection, which includes over 12,000 works, representing diverse art forms from British Columbia and beyond.

For those looking to participate more actively, the celebratory events will continue into the evening, with a special Free First Friday entry from 4 PM to 8 PM. It’s an occasion for families to come together, engage in art discussions, and create memories.

A Rich Tapestry of History

The Vancouver Art Gallery's journey has been marked by significant moments, like its relocation to the former courthouse in 1983, and the expansion efforts led by iconic Canadian artist Emily Carr’s friend, Lawren Harris. With plans for a new, state-of-the-art facility set to commence construction later this decade, the gallery is poised for an exciting future that promises to foster even deeper community engagement.

Unique Merchandise and Opportunities for All

In celebration of its anniversary, the Gallery Store will unveil special merchandise, including archival logo apparel, allowing visitors to take a piece of the celebration home. This new line of T-shirts, tote bags, and hats not only commemorates the gallery’s legacy but also supports local artists.

Community Engagement and Cultural Connection

As families, especially millennials and new parents, explore local events, the Vancouver Art Gallery offers a unique opportunity to connect with Vancouver’s rich cultural tapestry. It serves as a reminder that art is not only a visual experience but a shared journey that brings people together across generations. Whether you're a long-time visitor or a first-timer, this 95th anniversary is a perfect moment to appreciate the art and culture that makes Vancouver truly special.

Homelessness Action Week: How Vancouver Is Supporting Youth in Need

Update Supporting Our Youth During Homelessness Action Week This Homelessness Action Week, from October 11-17, Family Services of Greater Vancouver (FSGV) is highlighting a vital resource for our community: Directions Youth Services. This 24/7 drop-in center serves young people who are unhoused or precariously housed in Metro Vancouver, working tirelessly to provide essential support for those in need. Decades of Dedicated Service For over thirty years, Directions has been a cornerstone for youth in crisis, providing not just meals but also a safe haven where support is tailored to the unique needs of each individual. Young people often face varying challenges as they navigate homelessness, requiring different avenues of support—such as stable housing, financial assistance, and essential life skills. Recognizing that timely intervention can prevent the long-term effects of homelessness, Directions aims to be a first point of contact for youth seeking to stabilize their lives. The Need for Youth-Centered Support Current statistics paint a stark picture of homelessness among the youth in our community. More than 170 young people are unhoused in Greater Vancouver on any given night. This past year, half of the youth accessing Directions were first-time visitors, indicating a growing urgency for accessible support systems. Particularly concerning is that 22% of those new visitors are teenagers aged 13-18, underscoring the pressing need for early and supportive interventions. A Safe Space for All Directions not only offers essential services like onsite medical clinics and job programs, but it also fosters a community space that is inclusive. With 8% of its youth clientele identifying as 2SLGBTQIA+, the center creates events and workshops specifically designed to uplift and support diverse identities. Such initiatives can significantly enhance a young person's sense of belonging during crucial developmental years. Get Involved: Support Our Youth As we reflect on the importance of community and support this Homelessness Action Week, consider donating to Directions Youth Services or volunteering your time. Every little bit helps in ensuring that no young person has to walk through life alone. Let's come together to support the futures of our youth as they navigate the challenges of homelessness.

Experience the ON UNCEDED TERRITORY Exhibition: A Celebration of Indigenous Art

Update Explore Indigenous Art at ON UNCEDED TERRITORY The Vancouver Park Board invites families and art enthusiasts to experience ON UNCEDED TERRITORY, a delightful free exhibition showcasing the talents of artists from the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. From September 25 to October 4, 2026, the vibrant Roundhouse Community Centre will be alive with the creative expressions of these incredible artists. Meet the Artists Behind the Magic This exhibition shines a light on three prominent local artists: Chrystal Sparrow, T’uy’t’tanat-Cease Wyss, and Mark George. Each artist brings a unique perspective to their work, interweaving traditional teachings with contemporary practices. For instance, Sparrow incorporates Coast Salish methodologies in her carvings and paintings that echo modern Indigenous identities, while Wyss dives into Indigenous plant knowledge and the deep connections to their land sacred to the Squamish people. Meanwhile, George, a master carver and Tsleil-Waututh heritage storyteller, captures the essence of Tsleil-Waututh culture in his demonstrations. Special Events to Engage the Community As part of the festivities, you'll find opening receptions featuring engaging performances, such as the ‘Dance Party for the Land and Sea’ by T’uy’t’tanat-Cease Wyss, alongside canoe carving demonstrations led by Mark George. Families are encouraged to join the interactive sessions throughout the exhibition, where they can learn about the processes of traditional carving and the rich history each piece embodies. A Celebration of Community and Heritage This exhibition is a vital reflection on the local Indigenous community's creativity and resilience. It aligns with National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, making it an ideal opportunity for families to engage in meaningful conversations about history and culture. As Emily Brooks often emphasizes, understanding and supporting local initiatives strengthens community bonds, helping us learn from each other and bridge gaps among the diverse stories that shape our neighborhoods. Don't miss out on this enlightening experience in the heart of Vancouver. Mark your calendars for this enriching event that fosters connections to Indigenous art and culture within our community!
