As the BC Lions gear up for their much-anticipated games this summer, a remarkable transformation has been underway at Kelowna's Apple Bowl stadium. Traditionally serving as a local sports facility, the stadium is being adjusted to accommodate a temporary capacity of approximately 18,500 seats, providing a rare platform for professional football in the picturesque Okanagan region. This extraordinary development comes as the BC Lions temporarily shift away from their home base in Vancouver's BC Place Stadium, which is currently occupied by FIFA World Cup events.
From Community Hub to Professional Venue
The Apple Bowl, originally built in 1995 and designed to seat around 2,300 fans, is undergoing one of the most significant temporary expansions in its history. With the help of Ontario-based Tower Scaffolding and Events, crews have quickly assembled extensive grandstands and additional infrastructure around the field. Doug Nicholas, Kelowna’s sports and events services manager, highlights that this initiative is paving the way for thousands more fans to enjoy a national-level sporting event locally. “It’s a significant upgrade, turning our community facility into a major sports venue,” he emphasizes.
Enhancing the Game-Day Experience
The modifications at the Apple Bowl include not only additional seating but also enhanced amenities such as expanded sideline seating, hospitality areas, and updated broadcasting facilities—everything needed to host a Canadian Football League (CFL) game effectively. “The first game of Touchdown Kelowna was a huge success, and we look forward to bringing even more energy and excitement to the next match,” shared Matt Baker, a spokesperson for the BC Lions, reflecting on the crowd engagement during this venue’s inaugural game.
Building Community and Sports Culture
This initiative also reflects a broader trend where sports teams are attempting to connect more intimately with their fans.
