Fort St. John Takes Pride: Celebrating Unity and Diversity
This June, Fort St. John will celebrate its vibrant LGBTQ+ community during the much-anticipated 10th annual Pride Walk and Festival, scheduled for June 7th at Centennial Park. The event promises a day filled with joy, inclusiveness, and a showcase of local talent, making it a significant occasion for both residents and visitors.
A Celebration Decade in the Making
For ten years, the North Peace Pride Society has been at the forefront of organizing this meaningful celebration. Jessica Beaumont, the vice president of the Society, highlights the importance of the event saying, "Pride stands for not having to hide, and for being able to just be proud of what you do." This message resonates deeply with many attendees who come together to express their identities and experiences.
What to Expect at the Festival
Booths will open at 1 p.m., with speeches to introduce the community and the event’s sponsors scheduled for 2 p.m. The official Pride Walk will follow, amplified by a high-quality sound system provided by local experts, Sound in Town. The atmosphere will be enlivened with music, drawing participants into a spirited march that celebrates love and acceptance.
After the walk, attendees can enjoy a lively program that includes local musical performances and an amateur drag show featuring talented artists from the area. New this year is a community talent show, where anyone can showcase their abilities, whether it be music or crafts, promoting creativity and self-expression.
The Importance of Community Engagement
Events like the Pride Walk foster a sense of belonging and encourage acceptance within the community. For families, it serves as a powerful reminder of the values of love and respect that they can instill in their children. The festival also provides an opportunity for local businesses and organizations to show their support for diversity and inclusion.
