A Climber's Heroic Intervention Saves Lives
On Friday afternoon, a local climber became an unexpected hero when he intervened during a harrowing rescue operation on Mount Prevost, Vancouver Island. A hang-glider had crashed into a steep gully, leaving him unconscious and in critical condition. While two Search and Rescue (SAR) teams responded, they faced insurmountable challenges due to the treacherous terrain that made the crash site nearly inaccessible. SAR's response team was split, with some climbing to the top of the bluff while others searched from below; yet both teams were unable to reach the crash site because of the vertical rock face. According to Cowichan SAR’s search manager, Tina Phillips, the situation was dire, requiring an effective strategic response.

Against all odds, the local climber initiated a free-climb ascent through a narrow fissure known as a rock chimney. He reached the victim, who was suffering from significant injuries, including a cracked helmet, facial injuries, and signs of shock. "His help was absolutely phenomenal," Phillips noted, emphasizing the climber's role in administering first aid while communicating with the SAR team positioned below, ensuring that the victim received critical care almost immediately.

After stabilizing the glider's condition, the climber assisted SAR in preparing for the next phase of the rescue. With conditions worsening and time of the essence, North Shore Rescue was called for backup. They arrived with experienced personnel equipped to handle critical incidents and swiftly hoisted both the climber and the rescuee to safety as night fell—a scenario that required quick decision-making and teamwork.
