Empowering Youth Through Innovation: The Black Futures Month Fundraiser
Every year, Vancouver's Ethọ́s Lab hosts the Black Futures Month fundraiser, which combines the celebration of Black history with practical support for local initiatives. This February, the goal is ambitious: to raise $150,000 to enhance programming and staffing at Ethọ́s Lab, which prioritizes innovative learning experiences for young people. To kick off this effort, the organization has already secured $50,000 from early supporters, including the NBA Foundation and Tropicana.
Join the Blackathon of 2026!
As part of this month-long celebration, Ethọ́s Lab is also gearing up for its flagship event—the Blackathon on February 27, 2026, at the Microsoft Vancouver Campus. This event is tailored for teens in grades 8-12 and features a design jam and immersive experiences that combine learning about Black inventors with hands-on innovation. Participants will access mentorship from leaders in the tech industry, including Microsoft and Electronic Arts, as they dive into projects focusing on artificial intelligence and community impact.
Building Skills and Community
The Blackathon is more than just a competition; it’s an interactive, educational experience nurturing creativity and critical thinking. Each team will work on redesigning the concept of Hogan’s Alley using generative AI tools, blending history with modern technology and design principles. The winning group will walk away with curated prizes, but every participant will gain invaluable skills essential for the future.
Beyond the Fundraiser: A Vision for the Future
This year’s fundraiser coincides with the expansion of Ethọ́s Lab into an upgraded 2,700-square-foot space. This facility will enhance the community’s access to innovative programming, including expanded clubs focused on gaming and artificial intelligence, as well as new performance and production areas for budding youth artists and innovators. The organization's ability to grow and cater to diverse programming illustrates an ongoing commitment to nurturing the potential of every young person involved.
